One diet that has helped me is the Paleolithic Diet, also know as the Cave Man / Hunter-Gatherer Diet. In essence, it is food that man ate even before he mastered the art of cooking food with fire. In short, fruit which is plucked from a tree, and fish (such as tuna, sardines, and salmon) are some of the main staples. When I ate these foods for breakfast (fruit and fish), I was amazed at how much better I felt in comparison to eating an Amercian breakfast (milk, boxed cerial, toast, fried eggs, etc). I noticed that eating an apple (especially a granny smith apple) first thing in the morning was a big plus. Apples are loaded with enzymes and malic acid which help relax stiff muscles. I also once read that Granny Smith Apples are the only fruit that will not feed candida.( Grapefruit and Kiwi are two other fruits that candida have a difficult time feeding off of ).
The following is a link to explain more on the Paleolithic Diet
Another breakthrough for me was steaming Egg Plant with other vegetables on a daily basis. In Chinese Medicine, Egg Plant is known for "moving the blood". In the fibro world our blood is stagnant and anything that can help move the blood in welcomed. To my surprise, I found that my muscles felt much better and my circulation improved as well, when I steamed Egg Plant on a daily basis. I learned this from Dr.Price at the White Pine Clinic in Tucson, Arizona who studied Chinese herbalogy in Japan for 6 years. www.whitepineclinic.com
Kevin Trudeau, author of "Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About", mentions to daily eat 1 organic grapefruit , 1 apple, and two salads per day. He says this will help tremendously with elimination and sluggishness. Brenda Watson, from Renew Life Products, mentions 1 apple and 1 stalk of celery will give you the sufficient amount of fiber you need to stay regular.
"THE BODY ECOLOGY DIET"
People with FM often have Candida (yeast overgrowth) in the intestines that create a myriad of intestinal problems. These problems can range from chronic intestinal pain, bloating, indigestion, etc. Let's look at some solutions to this problem of IBS:
The Body Ecology Diet (a book written by Donna Gates), gives a wonderful menu of foods that will starve and eliminate candida, yet at the same time feed you. I highly recommend this masterpiece of a book that goes into great detail on the science of food interaction within the human body. The foods she recommends will help heal the digestive tract.
This book will teach you how to heal your intestinal tract and immune system through alkaline foods. This book was a life-saver for me as I began to incorporate these "healing" foods into my life. The book can be bought at "Whole Foods" Health food store. Their is a strong emphasis on eating grains such as amaranth, quinoa, and millet which nourish you and starve candida. Amaranth was a key in bringing healing to my physical body and emotions.
Amaranth is an inexpensive grain that can be bought at any health food store. Not only will it help alleviate constipation, but it will heal your intestinal tract as well. You will loose weight and your face will become much "tighter". Amaranth is a grain that will help alkalize your body. Remember, cancer and viruses grow in an "acidic" body. Amaranth was used by the Aztecs as a main source of protein for hundreds of years. It made them a strong race. Cortez overtook this tribe by destroying their Amaranth fields. Amaranth will not feed Candida and is also a good source of fiber.
To prepare it:
Take one cup of Amaranth and soak it in a pan of water over night. In the morning, drain the old water, and put 3 cups of water in a pan with the cup of Amaranth. Boil for 5- 20 minutes. Drain the water and dish out on a plate. Add stevia, vanilla flavoring, or eat it plain. Some people will even put it in their orange juice, since the taste is somewhat plain.
Donna Gates has more to say about this in her book, "The Body Ecology Diet". I usually cook the grain in a steamer, so I am boiling the grain below, and steaming vegetables on top. I will eat this for breakfast, lunch ,or dinner.
Donna also mentions making your own CULTURED VEGETABLES. These cultured vegetables with probiotics help restore the intestinal tract by rebuilding the good flora in the intestines. I went to one of Donna's workshops and could not believe the energy I felt from just one bite of her cultured vegetables. It convinced me to start making my own. Making the cultured vegetables can be a bit time consuming, however, it is well, well worth it. If you don't have time for the kitchen, you can order the cultured vegetables already made through Guy Pottlman at: 323-467-0455.
